Hernando’s Hideaway. A tango written by Jerry Ross and Richard Adler for the musical The Pajama Game, in 1954. After the success of the musical, several restaurants around the world used the name, including one in Hong Kong (actually called Fernando’s Hideaway, but we won’t quibble), where I came across the quote about “ a meal without wine“.
Wikipedia reckons ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’ became the nickname for the (makes quotation marks gesture) “smoking room”for MPs in the House of Commons in London.
You might think that the lyrics of the song contain a clue as to why this might be so. I couldn’t possibly comment.
